Bellydance, In General:

This ancient dance form is more properly known as Raqs Sharqi ("Dance of the Orient" or "Dance of the East" in Arabic), and is uniquely suited to a woman's natural movements.

Dance classes are a great way to have fun, learn something new about yourself and other cultures, express yourself artistically, and beat the blues, all in a relaxed, accepting and supportive environment.

This dance can be enjoyed by all ages and body types! Pregnant women are welcome with a note from their doctor.

Class Descriptions:

Bellydance Basics: This class is geared towards absolute beginners: people who have never taken a bellydance (or other dance) class before. The emphasis will be on fun and learning something new about yourself and other cultures. No matter what your body shape, age, or personality, you will look great and feel great Belly Dancing! It will benefit you physically, mentally, and emotionally. See Current class dates and locations for this class.

Beginning Level 2 Bellydance: Continue your dance journey in this class, where we will explore many different topics, such as veilwork, finger cymbals, and choreography, while continuing to polish basic technique. This beginner class is appropriate for anyone that has taken at least one Bellydance class, up to one full year of experience. Each session has a different theme. Level 2A is recommended for people just moving up from the Basics class as well as anyone who would prefer a gentler pace, while Level 2B is recommended for people who want a little more of a challenge. See Current class dates and locations for this class.

Continuing Bellydance: This class is recommended for dancers who have been taking classes for a year or more and want to focus even more deeply on their Belly Dance practice (ask instructor if you are unsure whether to take this class). I will assume you know the basic movements of Belly Dance, such as shimmies, hip circles, and traveling movements, and are ready to take your practice to the next level. We will focus on technique and choreography, with a different topic each session. Advanced students are also welcome to take this class - you will be given extra challenges. See Current class dates and locations for this class.

What to Wear:

Anything that you feel comfortable in and that allows a range of motion: for example, a tank top or tee shirt with a cotton skirt, leggings, shorts or sweat pants. Usually we dance in bare feet, but if that is not comfortable, please feel free to wear ballet slippers or soft sandals.

Weekend Mini-Workshops with Haala

This weekend series is great for anyone who is unable to take regular classes during the week, or for regular students who want extra practice outside of class. These will be mixed level (but not appropriate for brand new beginners). Class sizes will be small to allow for personal attention.

Location: the Taj MaHaala, Haala's cozy home studio near Cary Town Center/Cary High School in Cary.

Weekend Mini-workshop dates

Keep on Raqin', Raqs Sharqi with Haala.

Saturday, September 18, 2-4pm.

There are so many varieties of bellydance in America today that it might be easy to overlook the original classic belly dance from Egypt and the rest of the Middle East, known as Raqs Sharqi. This is a beautiful, subtle style of dance that has strong ties to the rhythm and emotion of the music as well as the culture and history of the Middle East. We will focus on some of the most popular dance movements of this style, such as "jewels", accents, and shimmies, but also on interpretation and feeling the music the way they do.

Fee: $25 for 2 hours. Minimum of 3 pre-registered to hold each workshop. Become a weekend warrior!
