General Bellydance Class Information

Bellydance, In General:

This ancient dance form is more properly known as Raqs Sharqi ("Dance of the Orient" or "Dance of the East" in Arabic), and is uniquely suited to a woman's natural movements.

Dance classes are a great way to have fun, learn something new about yourself and other cultures, express yourself artistically, and beat the blues, all in a relaxed, accepting and supportive environment.

This dance can be enjoyed by all ages and body types! Pregnant women are welcome with a note from their doctor.

Class Location in Cary:

Clear Horizons is located at 1200 Trinity Road, right on the border between Cary and West Raleigh NC, just off of I-40, Exit 290.

Class Descriptions:

Bellydance Basics: This class is geared towards absolute beginners: people who have never taken a bellydance (or other dance) class before. The emphasis will be on fun and learning something new about yourself and other cultures. No matter what your body shape, age, or personality, you will look great and feel great Belly Dancing! It will benefit you physically, mentally, and emotionally. See Current class dates and locations for this class.

Beginning Level 2 Bellydance: Continue your dance journey in this class, where we will explore many different topics, such as veilwork, finger cymbals, and choreography, while continuing to polish basic technique. This beginner class is appropriate for anyone that has taken at least one Bellydance class, up to one full year of experience. Each session has a different theme. See Current class dates and locations for this class.

Continuing Bellydance: This class is recommended for dancers who have been taking classes for a year or more and want to focus even more deeply on their Belly Dance practice (ask instructor if you are unsure whether to take this class). I will assume you know the basic movements of Belly Dance, such as shimmies, hip circles, and traveling movements, and are ready to take your practice to the next level. We will focus on technique and choreography, with a different topic each session. Advanced students are also welcome to take this class - you will be given extra challenges. See Current class dates and locations for this class.

What to Wear:

Anything that you feel comfortable in and that allows a range of motion: for example, a tank top or tee shirt with a cotton skirt, leggings, shorts or sweat pants. Usually we dance in bare feet, but if that is not comfortable, please feel free to wear ballet slippers or soft sandals.

Level 2 Bellydance,(Pre-requisite: Bellydance Basics or equivalant introductory course, up to a year of experience)

Thursdays, July 16 - August 20, 2009, 7-8pm - Special Topic: "Summer Vacation". Journey to the Middle East without ever leaving Cary! Each week, we will learn a traditional folkloric style of dance from various countries and regions, such as Turkey, Egypt, Lebanon, Greece, and the Persian Gulf. This will not be "bellydance", but it will help you become a more knowledgeable and authentic dancer. This class will be part lecture on the culture, history and costuming of each region, part folkloric dance instruction, and part rhythmic instruction, since each dance uses a particular rhythm pattern. On the last class, we will have a mini-"hafla" (Arabic style dance party), and dance all the dances we've learned while enjoying some potluck treats from the countries that we have been studying.

Tuition: $72 for 6 weeks, or drop in individual classes for $17 each.

6/27/09 UPDATE: Only one spot left in class! Pre-register now to guarantee your place! When we do sell-out, I will create a waiting list for any other interested students. If we get at least 5 extra, I may open up a 2nd overflow class on Mondays.
